After two long years on the road to promote the appropriately-named Grand
Prix, Vive La Fête release their fifth album on 5th June 2007 “Jour
de Chance” (Lucky day).
Belgium’s sexiest couple are springing back with the season and a
new album with the happiest title…in theory, those should all be
signs of good luck.
If you don’t know about Vive la Fête (VLF) yet, don’t
worry… you’re only missing out on the cutest couple on the
scene in quite a few years! It was love at first sight for VLF, when Danny
Mommens, the former dEUS bassist, and his blonde goddess Els Pynoo first
met. They could have left it at magnetic attraction, but instead of gazing
into each other’s eyes all day long, the two lovers decided to combine
their talents and create an entire universe dedicated to glamour, humour,
and love. They had the good idea of naming themselves after the best possible
kind of command: Vive La Fête!
The musical combination is pretty surprising too! Groups like the Klaxons
might be getting lauded for their originality these days, but never forget
that VLF were some of the first to dare to merge two seemingly incompatible
musical trends and make of them something wild.
Vive La Fête’s kind of like if you took an 80’s pop sample, a bit of cold wave, the best kind of electronica, a smidgen of rock and the voice and lyrics of 60s French songstresses under the influence of Serge Gainsbourg… and then shook them all up. The resultant cocktail is one hell of a unique explosion! A true shot of pure eroticism. Add the fact that Danny and Els are hot sex gods with an innate sense of sexy showmanship (Make up? Check! Costumes? Check! Energy? Check!) Success had to be just round the corner…
After their first album, 2000’s Attaque surprise, Vive La Fête
were soon spotted by the great Karl Lagerfeld himself, who went on to declare
himself their number one fan! They did the music to accompany the 2002 Chanel
shows, and quickly gained media and public recognition. Then came more albums,
and tours all over the world, and passion wherever they went. Until now…
Els chose the title because, she says, “it sounds good and it references
something every human being wants: luck and happiness.” And even if
her dream day means riding her horse, then making a big meal for friends,
while Danny is happiest when he’s out riding his Harley and then eating
steak in a blues bar, they at least share the desire to try and give their
fans a dream day, even if it’s only one.
It’s a desire that makes itself known in the album’s tone, which
is much more organic and rocky than they’ve been in the past. Els
explains, saying, “I’m not anti-electro in any way, but sometimes
I find it a little too cold. With this album, we wanted to bring more warmth…” The
warmth is in the sound, something much closer to the way the live VLF experience
(something very hot indeed!) And in their style – Els looks less like
Blondie this time around, more like a 1960’s-eraBrigitte Bardot. Still
super sexy, but with less glitter on
The album is fresh and accomplished all at once… It’s set
to be remixed by big names like Blackstrobe and Scratch Massive already… and
of course, a tour is in the works…
Now everyone can have a Jour de chance!
